Viewing Tips
Here are some useful tips for making the most of time spent watching TV.
Watch Together. As you watch ARTHUR with your child, talk about what you see on the screen. Ask: What do you think will happen next? Has that ever happened to you? Sing along or dance with the music. Studies say that encouraging children to watch TV in an active way develops their critical thinking skills, memory, and imagination.
Suggested Activity: Elwingo
Make Connections. When the program is over, talk about the characters or try some of the activities you saw in the show. Share a book about a similar topic with your child. Point out things in the world around you that remind you of things you saw on TV. Connecting television to your child's life makes learning more meaningful.
Suggested Activity: Favorite Books
Encourage Positive Behavior. Research says that children learn by imitating people around them. This includes the people they see on TV. The characters on ARTHUR set good examples. They use problem-solving skills when difficulties arise. They act with respect, kindness, and consideration. They also get excited about reading and writing, and this behavior encourages a love of books in children who see it modeled. Older children can relate to Arthur and his friends, while preschool children often focus on D.W., Baby Kate, and Pal.
Suggested Activity: High Five
Build on Your Child's Curiosity. ARTHUR supports children's curiosity about the world. Notice which ARTHUR episodes and topics interest your child. Read a book or draw pictures about the show. This sends your child the message that his or her interests and ideas are worth exploring.
Suggested Activity: Art Gallery
